When you think about vacations in Portugal, the city that comes in your mind is the charming Lisbon.
However, this year, a new destination comes from the right and sends us to Braga’s nets! This destination is among the 15 best cities for 2019, and of course, we were intrigued to find out more about this place.
So, shall we explore one of Portugal’s oldest city?
The city is famous for its temples and it is said to be the religious center of Portugal. Its main and oldest cathedral is Bom Jesus do Monte, which is the most famous tourist attraction. The temple, located in a hilltop with 640 steps (do not forget to wear comfortable shoes), is a pole of attraction of the believers from the 14th century. What will impress you is the zig-zag architecture of the stair and the view of the city that is fascinating!
Another temple that you can visit is the Braga Cathedral, where the tomb of King John’s son, 15th century, is located.
A visit to Republic square is a must. The square is also known by the name “Arcada” and hosts coffee shops and restaurants. After a long day on the streets, it may well be considered as “manna from heaven” since this is a place you can find food. We recommend closing your day with a drink to relax your body from the tiredness.
At the area, you can find the temple of Igreja de Santa Cruz and the big fountain that demonstrates the waters’ dance gracefully.
The Medieval Episcopal Palace of Braga and the Santa Barbara Gardens (next to the palace) are an essential attraction for your list of explorations. The garden together with the walls of the castle take you back to other centuries – they reminded us of a 17th-century film, with a couple playing a romantic scene.
You can also visit the Raio Palace, reminiscent of the colorful buildings of Barcelona – there is a museum with medical artifacts in the area.
You cannot leave from a destination without doing shopping. The main shopping street, Avenida da Liberdade, is hosting traditional and designers’ shops and shopping centers that can offer anything you want.
For the end, we recommend the various events that the city is famous, with that of White Night to be the most important. The event scheduled for 6th September 2019 with dozens of concerts on the streets.
Braga is about 3.30 hours away from Lisbon (by train), and another option is to combine both destinations.
